When completed, the Mail Creek trail will provide a significant trail connection for Southeast Fort Collins residents, providing them direct access to the Power Trail and remaining Fort Collins trail system. To connect with the Power Trail, the Mail Creek Trail requires a crossing over the BNSF railroad tracks south of the Willow Springs neighborhood. The railroad requires the bridge to be enclosed as it crosses the railroad tracks, providing protection for the train and pedestrians. The Park Planning & Development team worked closely with national bridge fabricator Contech to design a custom bridge that meets the enclosure requirements of the railroad, is mindful of maintenance needs such as snow removal and daily maintenance and provides an overall aesthetic that fits Fort Collins.
After exploring several alternatives, the team determined the best solution to be a series of gradated panels that attach to the inside structure of the bridge. Each panel includes gradated circular openings, with the largest opening 2” in diameter. Bridge truss members are designed to be aligned with the seams of the panels, providing a clean aesthetic. Beetle kill pine boards cover the ceiling of the bridge structure, creating an inviting environment, and contrasting with the white painted steel of the structure. Accent lighting provides safe passage at night, and subtly illuminates the structure at night.
