Woonerf, or “living street”, is a European design concept that provides the framework for this redevelopment project in historic Old Aurora. The woonerf concept creates an overlap between the street, the sidewalk, and the forecourt or front yard of the building. The result is a seamless pedestrian zone that extends into the street, allowing for community activities and greater pedestrian space. Site furnishings, street lights, bollards and trees assist in calming traffic and creating a safe environment for pedestrians and vehicles. An artists walk provides a place where local artisans & residents can display and sell their art work. Medici Communities partnered with City of Aurora Housing Authority to complete this innovative mixed use/affordable housing project. The project has received notoriety including 2004 Westword Best Development on Colfax and  the Governor's Award for Mixed Use Downtown Development. Habitat for Humanity declared: "Florence Square is truly one of the most creative, attractive, and unique affordable housing and mixed-use developments I've ever seen. It's also a stunning enhancement to East Colfax."
